Take action for a just redistricting

Legislators are considering reforming the way political district lines are drawn. Changes would ensure we all have a voice in choosing our elected officials. Contact your legislator now to ask them to support just and equitable rules for redistricting!

I’m writing to ask you to support SB717, establishing a just and equitable criteria for redistricting in 2021.

While much attention has been paid to who draws district lines, how they are drawn is just as important. Without clear criteria in place to ensure our communities have a voice, an independent commission would still have the ability to rig our maps.

Over the last decade, federal courts have repeatedly found that some politicians drew district lines in Virginia to limit the impact of Black voters. Redistricting criteria must prioritize providing explicit protections for communities of color and communities of interest so this pattern cannot be repeated. The federal Voting Rights Act has been systematically eviscerated--state level protections beyond the VRA are necessary to ensure every voice is heard.

Criteria must also put in place requirements for transparency and input into the process so voters have the opportunities to define their communities for themselves.

For these reasons, I urge you to support SB717 to establish just and equitable redistricting criteria.
